Options Abound for Old Trash and Recycle Bins

The city has several ways to make the best use of your old trash and recycling barrels and totes.

For those wondering what to do with old trash barrels, recycling bins, and toters, which can no longer be used curbside in the Salem’s new program, the city has some green options for residents.

Repurpose - Turn them into yard waste containers (free stickers are available at City Hall, the Department of Public Services, and the Engineering Department, which you can use to label them for yard waste collection). Use them to store recyclables that you don’t want to place curbside (returnable bottles, e-waste, foam such as Styrofoam).

Reuse - Sell or give away old containers using any number of free online websites or services. Residents from other communities may be willing to “adopt” your old bins.

Recycle - drop off at the Department of Public Services (5 Jefferson Avenue) during business hours in November or North Shore Recycled Fibers (53 Jefferson Avenue) during business hours any time. These containers will be recycled.

Swap - Bring and drop off at any one of these neighborhood locations during the weekend of November 21-22:
