SALEM, MA — The Salem School Committee will vote on a severance agreement for outgoing Superintendent Margarita Ruiz that would pay her through the end of the school year on June 30, then give her six months severance for agreeing to walk away from her three-year contract two years early. Mayor Kim Driscoll, who also chairs the school committee, told the Salem News that Ruiz would assist the department on transition issue through the end of the school year. Ruiz earned $199,420 in 2018.

"This was a mutual decision," Driscoll told the newspaper. "She recognized that this was in the best interest of the schools, and her, and the community." Also on Monday, the school committee will confirm the appointment of Assistant Superintendent Kate Carbone as the acting superintendent. She will fill that role until the school committee chooses an interim superintendent for the 2019-20 school year.
