Patrick Bettencourt—Willows Pier Regular
Ten-year-old Witchcraft Heights student loves challenge of fishing.
School may be back in session, but one Witchcraft Heights student is determined to keep summer alive.
Patrick Bettencourt, a regular at the pier at Salem Willows Park, has fishing in his blood.
"My dad started fishing; I wanted to learn how to fish too," he explained.

At first, Bettencourt said he had trouble casting. After a little help and some practice, he was ready to hang out with fellow fishermen who have been mastering the art of rod and reel for decades.
Bettencourt said he isn't phased by busy days on the pier when adult residents and visitors jockey for position trying to get a piece of the action.

"It's easier for me," Bettencourt said. "I just get between them."
According to Bettencourt, bass, bluefish and mackrel are fairly common catches where he fishes. One time, he said he caught a bluefish that was 33 inches long. Bettencourt knows his fish; he also said he knows where and when he'll find them.
When it rains and fresh and salt water mix, for instance, Bettencourt knows he generally won't have any luck.
"They [the fish] know when it changes," he explained.
Though school is now in session, Bettencourt said he enjoys the sport and will keep fishing as long as he can—he can't resist the challenge.
"You get to play with the fish. You reel it in and have a fight," he said.
