Police: Man Scammed Out of $1,200; Cyclist Struck by Crosby's, Motorist Cited; Approximately 600 to 700 Feet of Military Wire Stolen

Excerpts from the Salem Police Department log.

Saturday, May 30

At 9:19 a.m., vandalism on Planters Street. Plants pulled out of planters sometime overnight.

At 10:32 a.m., wire fraud reported on Washington Street. Spoke with victim who stated that someone claiming to be from National Grid called on May 20 and said he owed money that needed to be paid within two hours or they would shut him off. He ended up going to Hess on North Street and bought some “reload” cards as instructed by the “national grid” party. The reporting party sent $1,200. Sometime later, he received his real bill from National Grid, and there was a termination notice. He called and found out it was a scam. He was advised that he was scammed, and there was probably no way of his getting his money back. He was advised a report will be on file.

At 12:34 p.m., lost wallet on Traders Way. Reporting party stated he thought he lost it at Home Depot several weeks ago.

At 1:43 p.m., malicious destruction of property on Congress Street. Reporting party said both windows of his Ford Ranger truck were shattered. The vehicle was parked on the first floor of Shetland’s parking garage near the entrance. Nothing was missing from the vehicle.

At 2:08 p.m., assault and battery on Highland Avenue. Security guard kicked. Debora Johnson will be summonsed to court for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot).

At 3:05 p.m., car vs bike on Canal Street. Motor vehicle accident involving a bicycle reported in the area of Crosby’s. The cyclist was on the ground when officers arrived. He was conscious and alert. The driver stated she was driving on Canal Street approaching Crosby’s. She made a left turn from Canal Street into the parking lot when she heard the cyclist struck her vehicle. The driver said she did not see the cyclist in the roadway prior to her making the turn. The cyclist stated he was riding on canal Street inbound, and did not have time to stop because the vehicle made a left turn crossing over into his lane of travel. The cyclist was traveling in the correct direction on the street, and was wearing a helmet. Officers interviewed a witness. The driver was issued a citation for failure to yield when making a left turn. The bike was damaged beyond repair.

At 4:32 stolen vehicle on Lafayette Street. Silver Toyota Tacoma reported stolen. Subsequently found. Geovanni Rodriguez, 44, of Salem, arrested for larceny of a motor vehicle.

At 5:14 p.m., larceny on Franklin Street. Victim related that sometime overnight someone came into his work property and stole approximately 600 to 700 feet of three-phase military wire.

At 5:31 p.m. locked bicycle with helmet stolen from MBTA lot on Bridge Street. The bike is a 24-inch, 18-speed blue Fila mountain bike. There is a Pepsi logo on the front of the bike. The yellow and black helmet and bike were valued at $250.

At 7 p.m., larceny from Walmart on Highland Avenue. Sean A. Raymond, 40, address listed as homeless, was arrested for shoplifting, subsequent offense.
