Police: Woman Locked in Business, Forgot That it Was a Holiday and the Store Closed Early; Woman Thwarts Teen Bike Thief; Distracted Driver Struck Guardrail

Excerpts from the Salem Police Department log.

Monday, May 25

At 5:04 p.m., motorcycle accident on Forrester Street. Officer came across a motorcycle parked in the middle of the street. The motorcycle driver stated that he had lost control of his motorcycle because the road was slick. He had a passenger on the motorcycle, and an ambulance was requested. A citation was issued to the driver for having a passenger on the motorcycle with only a learners permit.

At 7:02 p.m., commercial alarms on Traders Way. Receiving motion. Officer made contact with a person who is a volunteer at the business. She had forgotten that the store was closed early for the holiday and was locked in when the staff closed for the night. The business was checked, and all was found in order. Management was advised to make sure that all personnel are out of the building in the future.

At 7:49 p.m., party refusing to leave business on Essex Street. Pasquale N. Romano Jr., 38, of Salem, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

At 9:00 p.m., outside fire on Buffum Street. Fire department extinguished small outside fire in area of Buffum Street and School Street.

At 10:58 p.m., loud party on Rainbow Terrace. Party went inside and turned music off.

Tuesday, May 26

At 8:27 a.m., neighbor dispute over a fence on Lafayette Street.

At 9:35 a.m., pedestrian and bicycle traffic enforcement pilot program on Highland Avenue and Powder House Lane.

At 11:18 a.m., wallet stolen at YMCA on Leggs Hill Road. Female came into the station to report that her wallet was missing from her bag after being at the YMCA between 8 and 9 a.m. The wallet was in the women’s locker room. Reporting party canceled her credit cards.

At 12:25 p.m., motor vehicle stop on Cherry Hill Avenue. Officers observed suspicious activity of three males in a car. Alexander Jaslowich, 24, of Beverly, was arrested for possession of heroin.

At 3:04 p.m., motor vehicle accident on Federal Street in the area of Flint Street. A vehicle crossed over Federal Street and continued driving onto Flint Street, The vehicle struck a wooden guardrail on the right side of Flint Street. The impact dislodged the guardrail. The crash also caused damage to the passenger front tire, front fender and rear bumper of the vehicle. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed. The driver stated that she had been talking to her passengers, and got distracted. Due to the driver’s age, the fact she stated she was distracted and that the fact she stated it was time to stop driving - an immediate threat will be filed with the RMV.

At 3:37 p.m., larceny of bicycle on Warren Street. Reporting party told officer that she saw two teens on the walkway when she pulled into her driveway. When she questioned them, one of the teens got on the bicycle and rode away. The woman got in her vehicle and followed the teen. He ditched the bicycle in some bushes. The woman told officers that she made him put the bike on the bike rack on the back of her car. The woman discovered that her husband’s bicycle was missing from the garage when she returned home. The bicycle was described as a green mountain bike.

At 4:38 p.m., malicious destruction of property $250 or less on Hancock Street. Damage to a fence.
