Presidents Day 2022: What's Open/Closed In Salem
Banks, post offices, and other services in Salem will be closed Monday, Feb. 21 for Presidents Day.
SALEM, MA — Banks, post offices, and other services in Salem will be closed Monday, Feb. 21 for Presidents Day, a holiday established by Congress in honor of George Washington's birthday.
Salem City offices, including City Hall, City Hall Annex, the Community Life Center, and the SalemPublic Library, will be closed on Monday.
There will be a one-day delay in curbside trash and recycling pick-up.

Both of the state's "Stop the Spread" free COVID-19 testing sites in Salem -at Salem High School and at St. Peter's Church — will be open for their regular hours on Monday. The Curative mobile testing site at Riley Plaza will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Presidents Day doesn't officially include Abraham Lincoln's birthday on Feb. 12, which was celebrated by a handful of states. However, Lincoln's birthday is spun with that of Washington, who was born on Feb. 22, 1732, and observed on the third Monday in February.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971 doesn't mention Lincoln's birthday or Presidents Day. Some lawmakers argued during debate that Washington's birthday should be renamed Presidents Day to include Lincoln, but Congress rejected that idea.
Before the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971, Washington's birthday was celebrated on the anniversary of his birth regardless of the day of the week.

The Federal Reserve system won't be operating, so that means most local banks will be closed. ATMs will operate as usual.
The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets will be closed. So will Waltham Post Offices.
All public schools in Salem will be closed Monday and the rest of the week for February vacation.
All Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 19, and on Presidents Day.
The MBTA Commuter Rail will run on a weekend schedule.
