Sail Salem To Offer Boating Safety Course Ahead Of New MA Mandate

Those born after Jan. 1, 1989 will need to gain a valid safety certification as of April 1.

SALEM, MA — With the new state law requiring boating safety certification for all motorized boat owners of a certain age by the beginning of April, Sail Salem is offering a safety certificate course this spring.

The Hansen-Milone Act requires any operator born after Jan. 1, 1989 to get a safety certificate for this summer season. Those born before 1989 have until 2028 to be certified.

The new law applies to PWC, powerboats, and even sailboats under power.

Regulations go into effect on April 1. However, citations won't be issued until Sept. 1.

Sail Salem is partnering with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary (Marblehead Squadron) to offer a class on April 25 in the Function Hall at Winter Island in Salem.

The cost is $50, which includes eight hours of instruction and test, the textbook, and all paperwork for the certificate.

Pizza will be provided for a working lunch.

Sign-in begins at 8:45 a.m. with the class running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Class size is limited, so advanced registration is advised.
