Salem artist James Chisholm: Portraits of Nature in NYC Art Show

NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea's Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Salem artist James Chisholm in Modalities of Expression.

James Chisholm’s nature paintings are sensitive, dynamic, peaceful, and utterly alive. Chisholm works in both oil and watercolor, most often en plein air, to capture the unique beauty of the land around the northeast United States. Intimate, the pieces are less landscape and more portrait of New England’s breathtaking natural terrain.

With a unique perspective on natural scenes, Chisholm’s eye does not pick out particularly dramatic moments or even unusual spots. Instead he depicts views that are almost everyday, the kind of scene that a casual pedestrian might walk right by: a stream through a maple grove, or a simple sunny sky over marshland. These landscapes are treated in such detail and with such masterful care that they not only become specific and special, but they positively hum with energy. Chisholm’s watercolors dance with loose dabs of bright color, and his oils are polished triumphs of shade and form.

Chisholm is based in Salem, Massachusetts and regularly exhibits as well as teaches all around the Boston area. He is also an accomplished wood carver.

About the Exhibition

Translating the Way We Speak: Modalities of Expression

Without limits, the mind, the body, and the soul are free to experiment with the many forms of expression that are introduced and, sometimes, taken away from us. In this exhibition at Agora Gallery, seventeen artists are not contained to one style, medium, or technique as they explore how self-expression can take on a variety of forms. Be it elegant, dynamic, rough, or grandiose - each artwork has a quality that allows the artist to share a moment and feeling recognizable to the viewer but displayed in a manner that is new and unique. In this way, the exhibition Modalities of Expression challenges the audience’s own expressive methods and implores them to open their minds to something new.
