Salem, Beverly Mayors Join Coalition Advocating For Commuter Rail

A group of mayors from eastern Massachusetts says the commuter rail often gets overlooked in coversations about transportation.

SALEM, MA -- Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, Beverly Mayor Michael Cahill and other mayors from eastern Massachusetts communities are forming a coalition to advocate for the MBTA's commuter rail. The group says the transit system often gets overlooked when transportation gets discussed, even though it is vital many communities in greater Boston.

"It’s the lifeblood of our community in many respects," Driscoll told Commonwealth, which first reported this story. "There needs to be a voice for commuter rail and its riders."

The Commuter Rail Communities Coalition will be open to the mayor or city manager of any community that hosts a commuter rail station. The group has already met twice and has scheduled a third meeting for January.
