Salem Decalres Snow Emergency, Cancels After School Activities

With up to eight inches of snow in the forecast, officials aren't waiting to see how things play out.

SALEM, MA -- The city of Salem declared a snow emergency that will go into effect at 3 pm Tuesday. Seperately, Salem Public Schools officials canceled all Tuesday after-school activities on Monday, a day before a winter storm was expected to dump as much as eight inches of snow on the region. The All City 4th Grade Band Concert has been rescheduled for Thursday at 7 pm at Salem High School.

As of Monday morning, the weather forecast was still in flux, but even if it delivers lower snow totals, forecasters believe a wintry mix could make for a messy PM commute on Tuesday. The worst weather is expected to hit greater Boston around 3 pm Tuesday.

The snow emergency will remain in effect until further notice. On-street parking is banned during snow emergencies. When Salem does declare a snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from city streets. Vehicles that aren't removed are ticketed and often towed. The city has designated snow emergency parking locations, which can also be viewed on an interactive map.
