Salem Considers Shakeup To School Calendar
A survey of parents seeks to solicit input on changes which could include the elimination of April vacation and a longer holiday break.

SALEM, MA -- Salem school officials are considering a wide range of changes to the school calendar, including a start of the school year before the Labor Day holiday in September, a longer holiday break in December and the elimination of April vacation. The school system is currently soliciting feedback from parents in an online survey available on the district's website.
Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, who also chairs the school committee, told the Salem News that the district is trying to be proactive in reevaluating the calendar in hopes of minimizing days lost to snow. "We oftentimes find we have winter snowstorms that really impact the number of days students are in school, especially in January and February. We oftentimes say, 'Well, is this something we should look at?' But when we're discussing the school calendar in April and approving it, it's a little too late," she told the newspaper.
