Salem Construction Updates: Derby Street Paving, Palmer Cove Park

A three-week paving project is expected to begin on Derby Street Thursday, while the basketball court is nearly complete at Palmer Cove.

SALEM, MA — Paving work expected to last about three weeks begins on a stretch of Derby Street in Salem on Thursday.

The work will begin between Bentley Street and Webb Street.

No parking signs will be posted in advance with traffic adjustments. Work is expected to run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Vehicles should use Becket Street to access the ferry terminal.

During the project, Derby Street will detour to Daniels Street. Bentley Street, Turner Street, Becket Street, English Street and Allen Street will be closed to oncoming traffic.

The city also said on Tuesday that Phase I restoration of Palmer Cove Park is nearing completion. New trees have been planted and pathways were installed with the new hardscape plaza at the basketball court complete.

The final basketball court seal coating is expected to be applied this week.

Over the next three weeks, crews plan to install the community garden area, sidewalk and parking area along Salem Street.

Funding for the next phase of the improvements is through the city's Signature Parks program.
