Education Foundation Raffle Fulfills Travelers' Dreams, Educational Mission

Tickets for the Foundation's third annual "Food for Thought" raffle now on sale; drawing to be held on Halloween.

If you could fly anywhere in the world for dinner, where would you go?  Wiener schnitzel in Vienna?  A nice hot curry in Mumbai? How about kebab in Istanbul?

After you let your mind wander, wander over to downtown Salem and purchase a chance to win your two tickets to paradise. Salem Education Foundation (SEF) is currently holding its annual "Food for Thought" raffle to benefit the foundation's mission to provide funding for projects that further students' educational experiences in science, mathematics, the arts and humanities, going beyond the scope of those programs funded by the Salem Public School District. Now in its third year, the incentive has sent winners to Morocco and Amsterdam.

Though the raffle sends winners on the adventure of a lifetime, the proceeds leave a lasting impression on the children in Salem Public Schools.

The foundation has provided grants to teachers so children can experience a variety of different educational experiences. Thanks to the foundation, students have had the opportunity to:

  • Study wildlife by mounting infrared motion sensitive cameras in the Salem Woods.
  • Delve deeper into Chinese culture by sampling Mandarin foods and trying their hand at Chinese calligraphy.
  •  Create an oral history of Salem through interviews with residents.
  •  Experience how archaeologists work, by creating a dig site on school grounds.

These examples are just a "taste" of how Salem children have benefited from grants awarded by the foundation.

SEF was founded in 1994 as an independent, nonprofit organization to provide private, financial support in an effort to support creativity and innovation in our public schools.

Tickets for the raffle are on sale in Salem at Pamplemousse (185-189 Essex St.); Crunchy Granola Baby (72 Washington St.);  Waters & Brown (281 Derby St.) and Green Tea Yoga (10 Colonial Rd.) at $5 each or five tickets for $20.

Tickets can also be purchased at Salem Public Schools in the main office at Collins Middle School.  Ticket sales end on Saturday, Oct. 30. The drawing will be held on Halloween Day, Oct. 31, at the Fountain Stage on Essex Street at 4 p.m.  Participants do not have to be present at the time of drawing to win.
