Salem Hospital Mourns Employee Killed In Lynn Hit-And-Run

Emira Barucija, who worked in hospital cleaning services, was struck and killed while walking to a bus stop in Lynn early Wednesday morning.

SALEM, MA — The Salem Hospital community is mourning an employee who "touched our hearts" after she was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Lynn on Wednesday morning.

Emira Barucija, 55, worked in cleaning services at the hospital for the past three years. She was on her way to take the bus to work at about 6 a.m. on Wednesday when Lynn police said she was struck in a crosswalk on Western Avenue.

Police said the driver fled the scene but was located along with the vehicle later that day.

"Emira was well-liked by all who knew her," A Salem Hospital spokesperson said in a statement to Patch late Thursday afternoon. "Her warmth, kind smile, and quiet, yet calming demeanor will be greatly missed.

"Emira ensured that those around her felt appreciated and caring was in her nature, especially with her colleagues. Whether it was bringing someone a box of chocolates to brighten their day, or offering a warm friendly smile, she touched our hearts."

The hospital spokesperson said that Barucija "always kept a keen eye on patients" while working in their rooms and would report anything of concern to the nursing staff.

"This dedication and attention to detail made her an integral part of the care team," the statement said.

Lynn police said they intend to seek charges against the driver following an investigation.

Salem Hospital has made services available for colleagues who require support in dealing with this loss.

"We express our deepest sympathies to Emira's husband, family, and friends, and all those who loved her," the hospital statement said.
