Salem Launches Flu Shot Campaign With 'Maxine The Vaccine Witch'
The city wants 400 more residents vaccinated against the flu this season than last year as part of a community-wide campaign.

SALEM, MA —Salem is launching a public health flu vaccination campaign this fall that harkens back to municipal efforts to convince residents to get the first COVID-19 vaccinations a half decade ago.
The city this week introduced "Maxine the Vaccine Witch" as part of a campaign it said has a goal of getting at least 400 residents to get the flu vaccine for the city's 400th anniversary.
The city said the campaign is meant to encourage a step that protects not only individuals, but also babies, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems who are more vulnerable to serious illness.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of seasonal flu and help keep residents healthy through the fall and winter months, according to the city's Health Department.
"Salem thrives and is safer when we come together to meet challenges and care for one another," Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo said. "It's a simple but powerful way for each of us to contribute to a healthier, stronger community. By getting a flu vaccine, you're protecting yourself, and helping protect your loved ones and neighbors."

The city said residents who receive a flu vaccine at a city clinic can do so at no cost, regardless of insurance status. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are also available through local pharmacies, with most insurance plans covering vaccinations at no cost to the patient.
"The flu vaccine is safe and effective in preventing severe illness or death from the flu," said David Greenbaum, Health Agent, Salem Board of Health. "The Salem Board of Health encourages everyone who has not received a flu shot to get their flu shot now. Residents can attend either of the upcoming flu clinics, go to their local pharmacy, or contact their primary care physician to receive their flu shot."
Upcoming city-sponsored clinics are scheduled at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Dec. 6 from 10 to 11 a.m., and at Immaculate Conception Church on Dec. 13 from 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Community Care Van clinics are also scheduled at The Salem Pantry on Oct. 29, Nov. 4, Nov. 13 and Nov. 18, and at Lifebridge Main Campus on Nov. 3.
Residents who already received a flu shot can still take part by showing proof of vaccination at the Salem Health Department during regular business hours to receive a free Maxine the Vaccine Witch sticker while supplies last.
