Salem Launches 'Lockbox' Program To Help Protect Seniors

Residents 60 years old or older can register the lockbox password with the police to allow access to their home in an emergency.

The lockbox would include a key to the house or apartment and allow first responders to access homes in an emergency without causing any unnecessary damage.

SALEM, MA — Salem seniors can take advantage of the city's new "lockbox" program designed to provide a safety net for older residents living on their own in the case of an emergency.

The city has set up a free program through the police department, and in collaboration with Salem for All Ages, that allows residents 60 years old or older to register a code-operated lock box with police voluntarily. The lockbox would include a key to the house or apartment and allow first responders to access homes in an emergency without causing any unnecessary damage.

"As an AARP Age-Friendly Community, Salem is committed to our goals of being a livable, safe, and vibrant city, aiming to lift up all our residents, no matter their age or ability," Mayor Dominick Pangallo said. "Launching this important program is one more step toward ensuring that we are a community where we can all have peace of mind and feel secure as we age. "

Lockboxes must be purchased and are available online or at local hardware stores.

To register a lockbox, residents will need to provide the SPD with their name, address, phone number(s), and the location and code of the lockbox. Information can be provided by emailing CIU@salempd.net or by calling 978-744-0171. Those participating in this service are advised to let families and friends know to notify the police if they believe there is an emergency.

The Lockbox Registration Program is for any Salem adult aged 60 or over regardless of health status and ability.

This service builds on two existing public safety programs designed for those who are housebound and/or disabled: "Are You OK?" — which is a wellness check service that provides daily phone calls to residents who qualify and includes a lock box — and a separate Lockbox Program that provides free lockboxes to those who meet eligibility criteria.

More on the programs is available here or by calling 978-774-0171.
