Salem Library Launches Sensory-Friendly 'Family Circle Time' Program

The free program is designed to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for families of those with sensory and spectrum disorders.

SALEM, MA — A new program designed to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for families of young people with sensory processing disorders and autism is set to launch later this month at the Salem Public Library.

"Family Circle Time" will be open to children ages 3 to 8 and will include learning through stories, music and movement.

"We are thrilled to introduce Family Circle Time, a program that goes beyond traditional library offerings to create a space where all families feel welcome and included," said Simone Lorrain, Head of Youth Services. "This is a step towards making our library and programming more sensory-friendly and enhancing our services to the neurodivergent community."

The program will incorporate noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets and fidget toys to accommodate a variety of sensory needs.

Family Circle Time encourages interactive play and fosters the bond between children and their caregivers/families. Families will have the opportunity to connect with one another, share experiences, and build a sense of community within Salem and surrounding towns.

The program will begin on Jan. 27 and run through April 6 on Saturday mornings at 10:30. The program is limited to 12 children per session.
