Salem To Offer More Resident-Only Coronavirus Testing

SALEM, MA —Salem residents will have additional opportunities to get a coronavirus test during the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

In addition to the walk-in test site at Old Town Hall and the drive-thru site at Salem High School, the city will add free, resident-only testing at Salem Willows on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with more dates potentially announced after Thanksgiving.

The Salem Coronavirus Awareness Network test will be a RT-PCR nasal swab test with results returned from the Broad Institute within 24 and 48 hours.

Testing will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with testing on Sunday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. reserved for Salem seniors 65 or older.

The drive-thru test requires proof of residence in Salem, but proof of citizenship and insurance is not required.

Residents do not need to be symptomatic to receive a test and there is no pre-registration.

The additional testing come as coronavirus rates surged in the city in recent weeks and there have been increasing complaints of long lines at free testing sites at Salem High and Old Town Hall.

Salem coronavirus case rates soared in the latest state report with the city now seeing 41.6 cases per 100,000 people and 262 confirmed positive tests over the past 14 days.
