SALEM, MA — Two Salem police officers and police K9 Madden were among the law enforcement manhunt for mass shooting suspect Robert Card before he was found dead following last week's shootings that left 18 people dead in Lewiston, Maine.

Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller and Mayor Dominick Pangallo said Officer Keegan Stokes and his K9 Madden were deployed to Maine at the request of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to search for the suspect in that mass shootings at a bowling alley and restaurant.

"There were fears that Card could have set explosive traps for officers searching for him and Madden is also trained to sniff out hidden firearms," Miller and Pangallo said.

Stokes joined retired Salem Lt. John Doyle, now an officer in the Maine State Police, in the search for Card, who was found dead on Friday.

"We take tremendous pride that these 'helpers' came from Salem and that we were able to supply a little of the determination and courage that defines these officers to our neighbors in Maine," Miller and Pangallo said. "Our thoughts remain with those who lost loved ones in this terrible event even as we continue to work to keep Salem safe this Halloween season."
