Salem Schools To Run ACs Overnight, Adjust Outdoor Activities Amid Extreme Heat Blast

SALEM, MA — Salem Public Schools said it is taking extra steps ahead of expected high heat on Wednesday as temperatures are forecast to surpass 90 degrees.

In a notice to families, the district said it is focused on keeping students and staff safe and comfortable during the school day.

"Our top priority is providing our students and staff a safe and comfortable learning environment," officials said.

Salem Public Schools said it will keep air conditioning units running overnight so school buildings "start off cool in the morning and are ready for the heat."

The district said that is "an unusual step that we take only during extremely hot weather."

Students are encouraged to wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing.

Water stations will be fully accessible all day and families are asked to send children to school with a labeled, reusable water bottle.

Cups will be available for students who do not bring a bottle, according to the notice.

Some school-day and after-school plans could shift depending on the temperature. Staff may move physical education classes, recesses, sports programs and after-school activities indoors to cooler spaces.

Outdoor time during the peak midday sun will be closely monitored and may be cut short, according to the district.

The district also asked families of students with heat-sensitive medical needs to reach out directly to their school.

"If your child has a medical condition that makes them especially sensitive to heat, please contact the main office at your school so we can accommodate them," officials said.
