Salem Sound Coastwatch is offering a Boat Camp this summer for children ages 10-13, from July 31 through August 4, 2017. This camp provides a week-long adventure-- exploring Salem Sound’s marine habitats, islands and maritime history on different kinds of vessels. The National Park Service at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site and Essex National Heritage have partnered with Salem Sound Coastwatch to make this camp fun and truly unique experience.
Each day campers will have a different boating experience -- from sail boats, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, and sailing schooners to motorized vessels. Campers will sail around Winter Island; they’ll explore Misery Island and the Lighthouse at Bakers Island while learning about the rich local maritime history, knot tying, navigation skills and more.
Campers will also explore the marine ecosystem. They will go tidepooling with knowledgeable staff who will explain the sea creatures that live among the rocks. They’ll go “fishing” with a seining net to see first-hand the different fish and marine life that live in these coastal waters. With kid-sized snorkeling gear, they will explore the sea floor in shallow water, and onboard the Sea Shuttle Endeavour, they will pull up a lobster trap and observe the sea floor with an underwater camera.
