Salem Sound Coastwatch Winter Water Bird Identification Session

See and learn about the exotic ducks and geese that spend the winter in Salem Sound at a free session on Saturday, December 3, 8:30-10 am at Winter Island in Salem. Experienced birders will set up spotting scopes, identify the birds, describe their feeding, breeding and other habits and answer questions.

Most of these birds spend the summer in breeding grounds in the northern arctic in Canada and Alaska. Their fall migration brings them to our coast for the winter, where the water is warm, the food is plentiful and the waters of Salem Sound (from Marblehead north to Manchester by the Sea) are sheltered.

Common eiders, playful buffleheads, red-breasted mergansers with their spiky crests, loons and other ducks and geese are some of the species that we’re likely to see.

This session is open to the public. Novices are welcome—no birding experience needed. Meet at the gazebo at the water’s edge. Dress warmly. We’ll be outside and it can get cold by the water. Bring binoculars if you have them.

The session will be canceled in the event of heavy rain or snow.
