Salem State Gets Sustainability Award

Salem State University received a Silver Award for its Commuter and Sustainability efforts.

SALEM, MA - From Salem State University: Salem State University has been awarded the Silver Massachusetts Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Award by MassDOT, Massachusetts' Coalition of Transportation Management Associations (MassCommute), and MassRides. This award recognizes the efforts the university has made towards creating a more sustainable campus, as well as the initiatives created which offer more options for transportation around the campus community.

The award, presented at a ceremony at Fenway Park on April 18, celebrates Salem State’s accomplishments, along with six other North Shore Transportation Management Associations.

This is the 8th year this award ceremony has taken place, and the third consecutive year that Salem State University has received an award from this coalition committee. The City of Salem also received a silver award for their efforts and achievements towards a more sustainable and green city.

According to MassCommute, “the ECO Awards are a celebration of Massachusetts employers both large and small who have shown a dedication to providing comprehensive transportation options. By offering and incentivizing smart, sustainable transportation choices, these employers are reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and supporting strong local and regional economies.”

Since 2015, Salem State University has made several efforts to become a more sustainable and green campus. On March 1, 2018, the Zagster Bike Share program relaunched in Salem, and on campus, for the second year. In 2017, 25% of Zagster members were Salem State students.

Other sustainability efforts led by Salem State University include carpool and vanpool matching, a ride-sharing effort aimed toward helping students/faculty find commuting partners to cut down on automobile emissions. The Salem State campus shuttles also drive a route around campus during the day, and go to and from the commuter rail station during morning and evening rush hours. And to accommodate those with their own bikes, Salem State has almost 400 bikes rack spots on campus, including covered bike storage.
