Salem State Police Chief Issues Statement After Unfounded Reports of 'Clown Sightings'

Chief Gene Labonte stated that university police have responded to several unfounded reports of "clown sightings" on campus.

SALEM, MA — Reports of potentially armed clowns have been popping up across the country, even causing Merrimack College to shelter-in-place Monday night after reports of an armed clown on campus.

On Tuesday, Salem State University police chief Gene Labonte issued a statement following the incident, as well as "several reports of 'clown sightings'" on Salem State's campus. Labonte indicated that the reported sightings on campus remain unfounded at this time.

The chief issued the statement to remind students of key safety policies on campus.

Students were reminded to report suspicious activity on campus, but also were reminded of the potential dangers of false reports.

"While we encourage students to report any and all suspicious activity, please be reminded that false reports are taken very seriously," wrote Labonte. "As we work to maintain a safe environment across campus, false reports that disrupt campus activity may result in disciplinary action, as fabricated reports are themselves a threat to the safety and well-being of those on campus.
