Salem Transfer Station Reopens For Yard Waste, Cardboard Dropoff
The dropoff location open to all Salem residents reopens for the spring on April 13.
SALEM, MA — Salem residents and property owners will be able to drop off yard waste and cardboard recycling at the city transfer station beginning on April 13.
The transfer station on Swampscott Road is reopening for the season on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Yard waste should be dropped off in a paper yard waste bag or dumped loose at the designated area on the site. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted and stumps and branches greater than 2 inches in diameter will also not be accepted.

Only clean, dry cardboard will be accepted at this location. Cardboard must be flattened.
The city is looking long-term cardboard recyling solutions with the transfer station dropoff being a temporary solution.

Cardboard boxes that can be reused can be returned to U-Haul Moving & Storage on Jefferson Avenue.
The next curbside yard waste collection will be the week of April 29 with additional weeks for 2024 planned for June 17, Sept. 23, Oct. 21, Nov. 25 and Dec. 16.
Curbside collection of yard waste takes place on the regularly scheduled trash day for the street. Curbside yard waste must be in paper bags or barrels. Do not place yard waste in Waste Managementcarts.
Residents who need to dispose of residential trash more than that which fits within an approved curbside trash cart can purchase official overflow trash bags for curbside collection. Overflow bags are available for $12.50 (roll of 5 bags) at the Department of Public Services (5 Jefferson Avenue), the City Collectors Office (93 Washington Street), Crosby’s Marketplace (109 Canal Street), and Winer Brothers Hardware (86 Lafayette Street).
