SALEM, MA — A week after helping bring 100 cats, two elderly chihuahua siblings and a 12-year-old dachshund named Pierre to Massachusetts from an overcrowded Louisiana shelter, the Northeast Animal Shelter once again relocated New Orleans-area dogs and cats ahead of Hurricane Ida.

The Salem shelter said Monday morning that, along with MSPCA-Angell Memorial, it brought an additional 36 dogs and 39 cats from Louisiana to New England to ease the burden on the Gulf Coast shelters amid the storm.

Northeast Animal Shelter said it is poised to transport even more animals from Louisiana, if necessary.

The Shelter is asking for donations in its endeavors to help rescue animals from the region and provide for them as they undergo veterinary examinations and await adoptions.

"Depending on Ida's strength and heading, we may need to evacuate even more animals in the coming days," the Shelter said. "In the meantime, help us ensure we have the resources we need to care for these arrivals by donating today."

Last week, two planes full of pets were brought north from New Orleans with 66 of them brought to St. Herbert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey, while chihuahuas Mikey, Mimi, Pierre and the 100 cats traveled on to New England where they were split up between the MSPCA's Cape Cod adoption center and the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem.

Northeast said the majority of the animals would be available for adoption as of this past Friday.

Those interested in adopting the dogs or the cats as part of this weekend's "Clear the Shelters" campaign can register here.
