Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race, ending his campaign after finding it difficult to make headway in a crowded field. Moulton planned to end his campaign during a speech Friday afternoon in California.

Moulton, 40, of Salem, represents Massachusetts' 6th District. The former U.S. Marine Corps officer has been a vocal critic of President Trump.

Moulton, who entered the race relatively late, campaigned on a centrist message that failed to gain traction. At times, he was considered a possible future face of the party. The crowded Democratic field will "shrink" to 21 with Moulton's departure.

"I think it’s evident that this is now a three-way race between Biden, Warren and Sanders, and really it’s a debate about how far left the party should go," Moulton told The New York Times.
