Shots Fired Into Lafayette Street Home: Salem Police

Salem police said a suspect is in custody after gunshots went through a window on Lafayette Street Tuesday night.

SALEM, MA — A suspect is in custody and a Lafayette Street resident is uninjured after two gunshots pierced his home's window Tuesday night, according to Salem police.

Salem police said Jovan Cortes Amaral, 19, is charged with firearms violations, destruction of property and resisting arrest. He was set to be arraigned in Salem District Court on Wednesday.

Police said officers near Lafayette Street saw someone fire multiple gunshots about 10 p.m. Tuesday night before he ran away from the scene.

Police said detectives ordered the suspect to stop, but he kept running and a chase ensued. Detectives found him hiding in the rear bulkhead of a Gardner Street residence.

A search involving Salem detectives, patrol officers, K-9 unit and Salem State University police recovered a loaded handgun and clothing police said the suspect is believed to have worn.

Police said there is "no information to indicate that there is an active threat to the public."
