Slim Pickinsgs For Interim Superintendent Opening In Salem

Six nearby school districts are also looking for leaders, which is impacting Salem's search.

SALEM, MA — Only two of the 12 people who have applied to be Salem's interim superintendent have the necessary job experience. Mayor Kim Driscoll, who also chairs the school committee, offered an update on the search at Wednesday night's meeting. Salem Public Schools named Assistant Superintendent Kate Carbone acting superintendent after Margarita Ruiz stepped down and is trying to find someone to fill the interim position for the 2019-20 school year.

According to the Salem News, which first reported this story, Salem has said in job postings it is looking for someone with five years of experience leading a school district. But, Driscoll said, only two of the applicants have any experience in the position. "Obviously, anybody can apply," Driscoll said.

Ruiz agreed to resign after several complaints were lodged against her, including how she handled the resignation and replacement of the principal at Salem High School. She will be paid through the end of the year.
