Snow Day Salem: Emergency Parking Ban Lifted

SALEM, MA — Salem lifted its snow emergency parking ban early Friday night after the city was hit with 10 inches of snow from the first storm of 2022.

The ban was set to expire at 5 p.m. with vehicles allowed back on the street, but discounted parking no longer in effect in city garages.

Salem Public Schools were closed on Friday for the first snowstorm of 2022.

For the first time in two years, it was traditional snow day in the city after the district used remote-learning snow days last year.

The district said Thursday it was canceling school with up to 4 to 8 inches of snow expected in Eastern Mass.

Because the state is not counting any remote learning days toward the required 180-day in-person learning requirement this year, the district — which switched to remote amid hybrid learning last winter — will have a traditional snow day.

Salem State University was closed to all non-essential personnel.

Mass General Brigham postponed the coronavirus vaccination clinic scheduled for Market Basket on Friday. The clinic will now be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Salem Hospital said the North Shore Physicians Group offices were closed for the day but will continue to offer virtual visits. North Shore Urgent Care was to open at 3 p.m.

Salem Hospital and the emergency room remain open.

Friday trash and recycling pickup was delayed one day and will be picked up Saturday.

The state also closed all "Stop the Spread" coronavirus testing sites on Friday. The Salem walk-in site at St. Peter's Church and the drive-thru site at Salem High School were both closed.
