Snow In Salem: What You Need To Know

The city hadn't declared a snow emergency by Friday afternoon, but here's what you need to know if and when it does.

SALEM, MA -- As of 4 pm Friday, Salem had yet to declare a snow emergency, but the city was reminding resident what to do if and when it does declare one this winter. The city is expected to get between 3 and 6 inches on Saturday. Forecasters are now calling for snow to start between 5 and 10 am on Saturday and continue throughout the day.

The quickest way to find out if the city has declared a snow emergency is to sign up for the Salem CodeRED alert system. The city will also place a red snow emergency banner across the top of its Website at Salem.com.

When Salem does declare a snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from city streets. Vehicles that aren't removed are ticketed and often towed. The city has designated snow emergency parking locations, which can also be viewed on an interactive map.

The city also has a snow shoveling assistance program for elderly and disabled residents. More information on the program, which is run by the Salem Council on Aging, is available on the Website.

The National Weather Service put a winter weather advisory for all of Massachusetts. The advisory will be in effect from 4 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.
