In the 1940s, a few local artists came together and began the first Swampscott Arts Association. But interest waned, and the first effort foundered. In 1969 a second attempt was made, and the organization soon grew to over 60 members. Space was needed for meetings and shows, and the Swampscott Public Library opened their doors to us. Paintings were donated and sold to fund costs. Community outreach was offered through programs to award a scholarship to a Swampscott High School student each year, which continues to the present. Each year we offer 4 non-juried shows for artists and photographers. Receptions are held and ribbons and prizes are awarded. Works are selected by accredited judges. Currently we work with REACH Arts, as they try to establish a cultural center in Swampscott, both as board members and fund raisers. And finally, we consider ourselves an echo of the beach artists of the 1800s, and invite all local artists to join in the fun!
