Multiple bones of the body may present with small growths that are visible on X-ray. These lumps often seen on the neck, the knees, the hips, and shoulders, are called bone spurs or osteophytes. Osteoarthritis is a major cause for bone spurs.

Usually bone spurs are not painful, except when they put pressure on another bone or a nerve. In the neck, osteophytes may cause a burning pain with numbness. They may restrict movement when present on the hip.

Both physical therapy and physiatry help reduce the pain associated with osteoarthritis and bone spurs.
