70Th Anniversary of D-Day at Battleship Cove

On June 7, 2014, Battleship Cove will embark on a day-long celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Allies' historic June 6,1944, invasion of the beaches of Normandy.

Code named Operation Overlord, over 1500,000 men and nearly 30,000 vehicles crossed the English Channel on that fateful day, becoming the largest seaborne invasion in history.

D-Day was not only a triumph of intelligence, coordination, secrecy, and planning, but a testament of the bravery of individual soldiers in combat.

At 10:00am, a ceremony led by Battleship Cove Executive Director, Brad King, will take place to commemorate those who fought so bravely 70 years ago for the freedom we now enjoy.

The ceremony will start with the marching of the Marine Veterans Honor Guard and the playing of the National Anthem by Navy Bank Northeast followed by an invocation from Reverend Lawrence. The ceremony will conclude with a laying of a wreath, 21-gun salute and a rendition of Road to the Isles, Blue Bonnet and Hieland' Laddie by bag pipers.

Hint - they carried over 75 pounds!
