Dress For Success and Other Suggestions

The do's and don'ts of dressing for success and other things to avoid when wanting to be taken seriously.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you're addressing the public, it is very important to make a good impression. That impression could be the one and only moment you have to convince someone of what you have to say, sell or represent.

How you dress can make all the difference. It is recommended that men wear a tie that includes the color red as it conveys power. And let's face it, having power, in an interview, sales pitch or when giving a speech can make all the difference as to whether you're not only listened to, but also believed. Make sure you don't wear a yellow tie as that suggests weakness.

The way a man knots his tie can also have impact as to whether he is taken seriously. A full Windsor knot, used years ago, in hangings, gives the impression of someone that is retired. And I don't mean retired by hanging. It is strongly advised by those who know about power dressing to employ a half Windsor knot with their tie. The half Windsor conveys a certain GQ, Euro chic.

For women, it is suggested to refrain from bright-colored suits. If a woman wears a red suit for instance, she is thought to be working for some airline, or even worse—a carnival. A woman must wear a dark-gray suit preferably with a pinstripe. A woman also shouldn't wear a tie. The tasteful use of a scarf is preferred.

When it comes to footwear, women should refrain from wearing spike heels, less she be thought of as a dancer at a gentlemen's club. Also, never wear brightly colored shoes. That is an absolute faux pas. Black or navy shoes are the standard for today's business environment.

Shoes are as important for men as they are for women. First of all, never wear clown shoes especially when interviewing for a job, or making a political speech. It is bad enough that most of our politicians are thought of as clowns, but never underscore that impression with shoes worn by those with brightly painted faces found at a circus. Also, some men think it chic to wear converse black and white sneakers with a suit. If you feel like you're going to be running a 5K, wait until after your speaking engagement before putting on your Nikes.

And lastly, never, ever reach for a glass of water when giving a speech. At least not if you're a conservative. However, if you’re a liberal—go ahead and reach for the Johnny Walker Blue, the media will give you a pass, even if you fall over while reaching for it.
