Sweet Day and Remembering My Papa

Valentine's day, chocolate and memories of my Papa are the subject of this new entry to my blog.

While many think today is the day for greeting card companies to rack up the dough, it's also a day when chocolate is OK as a breakfast staple!

So, go out and buy your favorite candy—whether it's chocolate or those little conversation hearts, enjoy! You could say this is a holiday that garners the most dental appointments.

I woke up to find a beautiful card and a heart-shaped box of dark chocolate-covered peppermint patties. Thank you my sweet husband for that! I even allowed the biggest fan of peanut butter cups (AKA my middle child) to relish in his sweet as part of his morning meal. Hey, it's got peanut butter.

The evidence was clear that my oldest, had chose chocolate over the normal breakfast. I gave a smidge of my own sweet to my youngest sweetheart. All in all, today's been a very sweet day so far.

My day is going to be having coffee with a friend, errands, making some sweets for my boys and remembering my Papa, who died today in 1980. Rather than be sad, I remember his own sweet ways and smile thinking about him.

I'm celebrating him right now by having my peppermint. The scent always reminds me of Papa. I'm not much of a smoker, in fact, I don't smoke, so there will be no smoking in honor of him. Maybe, I'll buy a little bottle of red wine to toast to him.

Words will flow easily out of this writer's noggin about Johnny for sure. Even though I was only 10 when he passed away, my right cheek still yearns for that stubbly cheek of his. My little feet (which are still kind of little) would race to him on every visit, and I'd lean into him—pressing against his cheek. There was something in that moment that has stayed with me forever, and will always be with me. It's bittersweet.

Will you eat chocolate? Have a romantic date? Or just sit around and mope because you don't have a sweetheart? Hmm, How will you fare during this Valentine's Day?
