The Family Survival Guide to a New Driver

The book is written in a way that addresses the issues that all families will face when they have a new driver in their household.

In The Family Survival Guide to a New Driver, Michael Schafer, a personal injury attorney from Kentucky teamed up with his two daughters Savannah and Rachael to provide a guide for both parents and teens, as to the many responsibilities that teens face as they learn to drive.  The book is written in a way that addresses the issues that all families will face when they have a new driver in their household. The book also is great in that it gives the parents a perspective from a parent and an attorney.  And, it gives the teen drivers a perspective from one of their peers.

As a parent myself, I really enjoyed reading the teens thoughts and ideas about safe driving and the law.  It can be a frightening experience for teens to be behind the wheel of a car.  I agree with Michael as he discusses the different ways we educate teens, and explains that while discussing the dangers of driving is important, teaching teens how to drive safely is more effective.

Data gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that teen drivers, who comprise only 14% of the population, are responsible for approximately 30% of accidents. This proves that less driver experience, training, and education are particularly risky.
