Transitioning from High School into a higher education environment can be a big leap.
Shorter programs that prepare students with industry-specific technical and soft skills can launch a life-time career or be a stepping-stone towards further formal education.
RYAN’S STORY:
Find out what's happening in Seekonk-Swanseafor free with the latest updates from Patch.
2014 High School graduate, Ryan DiMaio, found technology fascinating. He had little experience, beyond a mentor internship with a local technology company.
“I wondered where I could go after High School to pursue my career interests. I researched colleges but had heard that many people get themselves in a lot of debt.” Ryan toured a technical school, but wasn’t sure it was the right choice. Then, at his High School’s Career Day, he met an MTTI Representative, who told him about the Computer Service Technician/Network Installer program. “What sealed the deal was that during the program, I would be in the classroom half the day and in the lab the other half, learning computer and networking skills hands-on.”
Starting school, Ryan wondered if he could keep up with other students, whose hobby was building computers and troubleshooting hardware and software problems. He was quickly reassured. “The instructor made sure everyone understood; he would stop the lesson to make sure we were all on the same page before moving forward.”
Concerned about fitting in with students, many of whom were considerably older than Ryan, he found “…there were no fine lines between people. I could ask anyone a question, and everyone could ask questions of me.”
In Ryan’s only job before coming to school, he had almost no interaction with the public. “During class we role-played being on the phone, discussing problems with clients. The customer service skills I learned in class directly transferred to interning and working in the industry.”
Ryan credits not only his “fantastic instructor, Ken” but his Career Services Specialist. “Rick worked diligently to present new job opportunities and make sure students had all the information and preparation needed to achieve their internship employment goals. Prior to internship, I had two intern-to-hire offers. I chose a Technical Support position at Amazing Charts in North Kingstown, RI, where I was hired on the first day of internship.”
“Coming from High School, I expected a school-like environment. The program at MTTI feels more like job training than classroom education. The ability to learn hands-on made a huge difference in how I apply my skills today.”
TARA’s STORY:
After graduating High School in 2010, Tara Patterson attended community college for a couple of semesters. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do; there wasn’t much guidance at the college.”
Looking for a more career-focused education, Tara toured MTTI’s Medical Assistant program. “Everyone at MTTI was welcoming. They gave me detailed information about the program, and were honest about expectations in the healthcare industry—I trusted them.”
Although a year out of High School, Tara was still younger and less experienced than her classmates, some of whom had been in the workforce many years. “The first day as a student at MTTI, I was scared, nervous, but eager and excited to learn. The encouragement and support from my teacher goes beyond words. The education prepared me with the confidence I never thought I’d have.”
As Tara completed her program, she was hired as a Medical Assistant at the health care clinic where she had interned. Four years later, Tara is still working at the clinic, and continues to love providing exceptional care for patients. “I had the passion, but MTTI helped me achieve my goals. The staff, students and instructors help you all the way.”
