If you are dedicated to maintaining your own health and fitness—and you enjoy motivating others to do the same—a career as a Personal Fitness Trainer may be a good fit for you. Personal Trainers work with people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities. More than gym enthusiasts, Personal Fitness Trainers are teachers, coaches and cheerleaders to help their clients successfully achieve their fitness goals.
MTTI’s 900-hour Personal Fitness Trainer program prepares graduates to work in commercial health clubs, fitness centers, hotels, resorts, corporate fitness facilities, and private personal training studios. The emphasis is on training students to give each client a tailor made program, in preference to a “cookie-cutter” workout.
Students learn the foundational elements to exercise programming, but also assessments, client interviewing skills, wellness coaching, and working with special populations. These skills are taught in a “hands on” environment; students train in a health club setting equipped with Cardiovascular Equipment, Strength Training Equipment, Free Weights, Cable Stations, Functional Training Equipment and TRX® Suspension Training station.

Students can qualify to take the American College of Sports Medicine Personal Fitness Trainer Certification Exam, earn Certificates in CPR / AED, Functional Movement Screen (FMS) & a Certification as an AASDN Nutrition Specialist.
Important to helping them build clientele, students learn how to market themselves and their services. According to Walter Medeiros, Personal Training Director at Total Fitness Clubs--Bristol, RI and Seekonk & Dartmouth, MA, “Having a Certification is only 50% of being a successful Personal Trainer. I've seen many knowledgeable trainers fail because they did not understand the business aspects of personal training, and how to show value in their skills, to prospective clients. MTTI's program will not only prepare trainers for Certification, but also give them the tools they need to succeed in this field."

Students receive assistance in writing their résumé, preparing for job interviews, and following up on leads to obtain employment. 2013 Graduate Derek Martin is a Personal Trainer for NRG LAB Fitness in Mansfield, MA, where he leads classes in TRX, Strength Training and Cardio Fitness. Pamela Padula (2014) is a Fitness Director for Planet Fitness in Coventry. Craig Pulliam (2016) is a Personal Trainer for Professional Fitness in Warwick, RI. Brittney Troncoso (2016) has been training for LA Fitness in RI.
Guillermo Perez (2014), a Personal Trainer at YMCA of Greater Providence., has been specially trained to assist people using the new adaptive bike at the Cranston YMCA. The functional electrical stimulation, or FES bike, stimulates nerve endings, enabling patients to exercise muscles and prevent atrophy (muscle wasting).
Mike Topazio (2014), a Personal Fitness Trainer at 426 Fitness in Warren, RI, said, "MTTI’s program took me from being a 'gym enthusiast' into a health and wellness leader. I now have the tools to succeed in this field with confidence."
Alvin Torres (2014) is the owner and trainer for his successful business in Providence, RI: Hard Body. “I wasn’t always a positive role model for a healthy lifestyle. I grew up with eight siblings; my dad wasn’t around. There wasn’t much structure or discipline. I got into trouble a lot. At some point my life spiraled out of control and I did things that I regret. I didn’t finish High School; I did eventually get my GED. Now I carry myself with respect and dignity, and have ethics—I treat others the same way. I am so grateful and thankful to MTTI for taking the chance on me—for not judging me on my past mistakes, but instead giving me the opportunity to prove myself. ”
The program was initially created in response to the expressed needs of local industry leaders, who look for, “…not only Certified Professionals, but Qualified Professionals that also understand the business side”. Fitness employers and specialists continue to review the program twice each year, to ensure it remains current with industry requirements.
The curriculum’s developer, Jen Morin MS, ACSM-RCEP, is a Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist through ACSM; she has more than 18 years’ experience in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, group exercise instructor and program director. Jen, as MTTI’s Education Director, continues to oversee the program.
Classes are now led by Chris Raymond, B.S. CSCS-NSCA, assisted by Ryan Irving, B.S. ACSM CPT. Both Chris and Ryan are experienced Personal Trainers in their private practices. Together, Chris and Ryan seek to raise the industry standards by preparing others to be successful Personal Fitness Trainers.
MTTI began in 1985 as a Workforce Program, by area residents, Ward and Sharon Ring (now joined by their son, Eddie and daughter, Ali). Their mission was to serve as the bridge between employers who could not fill jobs in an occupational area, and unemployed or underemployed people needing a marketable skills set.
All of MTTI’s career training programs are continuously updated with the assistance of Advisory Boards made up of local employers, who oversee and advise on every program’s curriculum, tools, equipment and facility, etc.
MTTI is approved by the RI Board of Governors for Higher Education; accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) and licensed by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure, Office of Private Occupational School Education. The school is approved by the United States Department of Education for Title IV Financial Aid Programs. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify.
