
The 10A all-stars of the Swansea Independent Baseball League swept five straight outings during the past weekend to clinch the championship of their age division in the Summer Tournament sponsored by Attleboro Youth Baseball at the Poncin-Hewitt Fields in Attleboro.
Powered by a potent offensive attack and solid pitching, the SIBL entry defeated host Attleboro (17-2), Wickford, R.I. (8-2) and Upton (6-0) in pool play and Milton (18-9) and Marlboro (3-0) in the title round. Swansea has now captured titles in both tournaments it has entered this summer and boasts a perfect 10-0 record.
Swansea’s roster includes Nolan Potter, Josh Ferreira, Brandon Medeiros, Colby Campos, Devyn Vezina, Evan Thro, Connor Carey, Devin Machado, Alec Jancarik, Luke Escobar, Brandyn Durand, Jared Rapoza, manager Blake Campos and coaches Ernie Rapoza, Jay Machado, Mike Durand and Pete Ferreira.

In the championship game against Marlboro, Ferreira pitched the first five innings to earn the win, yielding just three hits and striking out six. Potter came out of the bullpen in the final frame to notch three strikeouts.
Offensively, Medeiros and Colby both collected two hits and Machado contributed a booming run-scoring double.

Opposite Milton, Swansea erased a 2-0 deficit in the third stanza with a seven-run assault and added an 11-run barrage to following inning. Vezina and Carey both ripped three hits for the winners; Medeiros, Potter and Rapoza all recorded two hits; and Potter drove in three runs, one more than Medeiros, Vezina, Ferreira, Carey, Rapoza and Thro. SIBL pitchers Campos, Medeiros andMachado combined for seven strikeouts.
Against Upton in a rain-shortened start, Thro tossed a four-inning shutout and scattered five hits to earn the win. Durand, Potter and Carey sparked Swansea’s offense.
A six-run uprising in the third inning lifted Swansea to a hard-earned victory over Wickford. Campos smacked three hits to pace the victors, while Vezina, Machado and Carey all chalked up two hits Rapoza drove in a pair of runs. Pitchers Thro, Vezina and Ferreira collaborated for nine strikeouts.
In its opener against Attleboro, Vezina rapped three hits – including a grand slam home run – and knocked in five runs to spearheaded Swansea’s 17-hit attack. Medeiros also finished with three hits, while Campos, Carey, Rapoza and Thro all chipped in with two hits and Ferreira and Thro both knocked in a couple of runs. Pitchers Campos, Medeiros and Ferreira blanked Attleboro after the first inning.
The SIBL stars will be playing at their Nike Site Playing Complex during the weekend of July 18 through 21 as host of the 2013 Mustang League North Region Tournament of PONY Baseball.
