SIBL Hosts Mustang League Region Tournament

The Swansea Independent Baseball League will play host to the 2013 North Region Tournament of the Mustang League (9- and 10-year-old players) of PONY Baseball this coming weekend at its Nike Site Playing Complex in Swansea.

          The five-team, double-elimination tournament will be staged Thursday through Sunday and will feature a SIBL entry along with the Dom Aitro Baseball League of New Haven, Conn.; the Tri-City Bombers of Troy, N.Y.; Belmont, N.Y. Elite; and the Brooklyn Bonnies of Brooklyn, N.Y. Admission to all games will be open to the public and free of charge.

          Tourney play starts Thursday at 5 p.m. when host Swansea battles Belmont On Friday, Dom Aitro will confront Brooklyn at 2 p.m., followed by contests at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (including Tri-City).

Tournament tilts are scheduled Saturday at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 5, and the tournament will conclude Sunday with one or two games commencing at 9 a.m.

          The winner of the Region Tournament will advance to the East Zone Tournament to be held July 25 through 27 in Chesterfield, Virg. The Zone survivor will earn a berth in the Mustang League World Series to be staged Aug. 1 through 4 in Burleson, Texas.

          Swansea’s roster for this weekend’s tournament will include Brandon Medeiros, Devyn Vezina, Connor Carey, Devin Machado, Colby Campos, Alec Jancarik, Evan Thro, Luke Escobar, Josh Ferreira, Nolan Potter, Brandyn Durand, Jared Rapoza, Manager Blake Campos and coaches Ernie Rapoza and Jason Machado.

          In preparation for the Region Tournament, the SIBL stars played in and won local tournaments recently in Mashpee and Attleboro. Swansea is currently 10-0 this summer.
