Somerset Man Drives Wrong Way on I-95, Crashes, Jumps in Water in Failed Escape Attempt, Police Say

Francois Garand, 40, was charged with a host of crimes.

A Somerset man was charged with a host of crimes after police said he drove the wrong way on I-95 in Providence early Friday morning, hit a vehicle head-on, then jumped into Narragansett Bay in a failed escape attempt.

Francois Garand, 40, had a passenger in his vehicle when he crashed then fled toward Allens Avenue and jumped in the water, State Police said. He was arrested when he swam out of the frigid bay.

Garand and his passenger suffered minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle he hit was not hurt, police said.
