The Friends of the Swansea
Public Library Annual Halloween program will take place on Thursday October 24th
at 7:00PM with The Gravestone Girls program, Welcome to the Graveyard: A
Virtual Tour of Swansea Cemetery Art, History & Symbolism. New England gravestones contain beautiful and
primitive images. Join the Friends for
this enlightening evening as The Gravestone Girls show photographs of local
cemeteries from the colonial era into the 21st century .
The Gravestone Girl’s mission is to "Keep Our Dead Alive!” by giving lectures on cemetery art, history
and symbolism. Their work aims to entertain and educate on
the historical perspective of old cemeteries by documenting and preserving the
beautiful art they contain.
The
Gravestone Girls endeavor to help preserve a rich folk art tradition unique to
our nation. We hope you are intrigued
enough by our activities to investigate and expand on the special history which
lives in everyone’s backyards.
