Woman, 20, Dies In Crash With Police Cruiser

The Somerset Police officer was responding to a report of a truck break-in when the crash occurred, police said.

SOMERSET, MA — A 20-year-old woman died in a violent head-on crash with a Somerset Police cruiser that was responding to a report of a truck break-in. The victim was identified by the Bristol County DA's Office as Hailey Allard.

The vehicles collided around 12:30 a.m. on Route 138 when Allard tried to take a left as the marked cruiser was driving in the opposite direction past her, police said. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.

The force of impact spun Allard's Honda Civic around to face the opposite way she was driving. She was extricated from the vehicle by Somerset firefighters and transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The police cruiser careened into a telephone pole, cutting the pole in half. The officer was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries.

Somserset Police said the cruiser was responding to a report of a man trying to break into a truck in the Grid Iron Pub parking lot.

"We are all saddened by this horrible tragedy," Somerset Police wrote on Facebook. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the person who passed away."

Police are investigating the crash.
