Sharon Pop Warner versus Canton Highlights

Sharon once again played tight games this weekend as the Cs and Ds each fell by a touchdown while the Mitey Mites got their first win of the season.

Cs end in overtime again, losing 6-0

For the second week in a row, the Sharon C's lost in overtime.  Neither Canton nor Sharon scored in regulation play. The offense, led by Jake Romanow and his powerful running had over a dozen first downs while the defense held Canton to just two.  In the first half, Romanow, Chris Gong and Aaron Strong ran down the field for substantial yardage. Blocking by Jaden Prince, Joe Cyr, Alex Bolt, Nico Daukantas, Yoseph Ellis-Rech, Cam Derry and Peter Conneely created great opportunities for the Eagle offense. Quarterbacks Austin Dodes and Will Stern combined to move the Eagles down the field.  A Stern to Chris Gong strike move the ball to scoring position.  Late in the fourth quarter, Matt Callan intercepted a ball at the eagles 45 and ran 20 yards back to set up a drive.  Austin Dodes lead the team to a third and ten.  The Jake Romanow brought the ball to the 1 yard line.  A turnover dashed the Eagles last scoring drive which pushed the game into overtime.  On defense, for the second week in a row, the Eagles gave up almost no yards.  Let by Drew Naisuler and Romanow, Canton managed only two first downs in the entire game. Tim Lui, Matt Harris, Yves Lambert, Michael Sullivan, Ronan Fulcher, and Ben Prokos stopped the Bulldogs dead in their tracks.

Ds fall to Canton 14-6

In another defensive battle, Sharon came up short against Canton to fall to 0-2. Sharon came out hitting and seemed to have Canton stopped on their opening drive with Javon Epps, Aedan Fahy and Evan Zunenshine making tackles. But, Canton broke through on a long sweep around the right side to get on the board first. The conversion was good to make the score 7-0.  On Sharon's first possession, the Eagles running game, behind blocking from Alex Tao, Kyle Mclaughlin and Aidan Ledgewood picked up several first downs as backs Tyler Freedman and Alec Barros made tough yards against a strong Canton defense. The two teams then traded possessions in the second quarter.  Tackles Matt Jacobson, Colby Lentell and linebacker David Baker were in on tackles from the interior, while outside linebacker Ethan Skelly and end Andrew Hoffman disrupted Canton's offense in the backfield. Defensive tackle Max Weston and cornerback Malik Sampson also helped keep Canton off the board for the remainder of the half.  In the 2nd half Canton got on the board early to make the score 14-0.  On their possessions, the Eagles ground game made some strong runs around the ends, helped by good blocking from center Eric Zhang, tackles Anson Weeks and Connor Sullivan, and end Kyle Sullivan, but were unable to get to the end zone in the third quarter.  The Eagles got on the board in the fourth quarter as quarterback Cameron Baker threw a touchdown pass to tailback Brendon Buckman to bring the team to within one score. But time ran out on Sharon as their onside kick attempt was unsuccessful.  Ed Benson, Xavier Davis and Shea Letendre were named game captains for the week

Mitey Mites get Sharon's First Win, 12-6

The Mitey Mites evened their record at 1-1 with a winning score in fourth quarter to give the team their first win of the season. Sharon set the tone early on Canton's first possession, with hard hitting up front from defensive linemen James Lilienfeld and Matt Mahoney. End Zach Taubman and linebackers Chris Lambert and Will Hippler contained Canton’s ground game and knocked several balls loose. Sharon's defense recovered a fumble, giving the Eagles good field possession for their opening drive. From there, Sharon's offense line, led by center Bobby Burns and linemen Dante James, game captain Noah Glassman, Kirit Gosetty, Danny Kramer and Aiden Kamens opened up holes for their running backs. The strong blocking allowed Sharon to get on the board first with a well-executed reverse from QB Ethan Taubman to tailback Ben Shocket, who outran the Canton defense down the left sideline. Left end Alex Gong had a key block on the play.  On the conversion try, a Canton defender stripped the ball away from Sharon and returned it to close to midfield, where game captain Drew Litner, showing great determination, finally tracked the Bulldog down, retook possession of the ball, and ran it back towards the Sharon end zone before he was tackled short of the goal line. Canton started the second quarter with the ball and ran into some tough Eagles tackling from Lucas Daukantas and strong defense from cornerbacks Chris Conneely and Brandan Derry before they were able to move the ball into the end zone to tie the score at 6-6. The teams went back and forth for most of the third quarter as David Hirshorn blocked effectively for Sharon and defensive tackles Nate Yaffe and Sam Cohen kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone.  Davis Weston had several long runs to the outside and Michael Campagna and Sam Agus pounded the ball through the middle.  On the last play of the period, the Eagles’ Ethan Shone broke free around the right end for a long run, but was tackled just short of the goal line.  The fourth quarter started with an Adam Nigrelli touchdown run from the 1 yard line to give Sharon a 12-6 lead.  Canton then drove back to the Sharon side of the field, before a key tackle by Ryan Baker and an interception by game captain Ryan Zunenshine ended the Bulldog’s threat.

The next flag game will be Sunday, Sept. 16.
