Now that another lake season is upon us, you may have noticed the low water level of Lake Massapoag. Residents should anticipate low water levels for at least the next six weeks, as per the Town’s guidance from the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program, State Division of Fisheries and Wildlife Division. Water levels must be maintained at these low levels in order to conduct the current treatment plan to control and combat invasive species now present in the lake.
All lake users are reminded to take extra care to avoid activities that promote the spread of invasive aquatic species. Avoid areas where invasive plant species have been observed. Before entering and exiting the lake, anyone using any type of watercraft please do inspect, clean, clear and dry all parts of your watercraft of any plant and animals - particularly lines, anchors, trailers, and all areas that tend to or are designed to take in or hold water while the craft is in use. The fine for violating the Aquatic Nuisance Control Program under M.G.L. Chapter 21, section 37B is up to $5000. More to the point, let’s all work together to stop aquatic hitchhikers and to get Lake Massapoag clean and clear of them.
