“With the help of The Sharon Performing Arts Association, a series of concerts resulted in order to raise money for these scholarships.”
Bernie likely had one of the largest collections of recorded music in almost all of New England, Iris said.
While he enjoyed teaching in the classroom and selling music at the store, Bernie was equally involved in demonstrating his vocals with the Neponset Choral Society.
“Bernie was very focused on opera and Gilbert and Sullivan,” Iris said. “He was able to land many leading roles because of it.”
Since Bernie’s death in 2001, much of his dream has already come true.
More than $12,000 in scholarships has been awarded to 27 students thus far, and will likely grow after Saturday’s concert.
“I think if Bernie was attending these concerts, and I’m sure in some ways he is, I bet he would be the one cheering and clapping the loudest,” Iris said.
“It’s just what he dreamt of.”
