Sharon Health Board Welcomes Info on Dog Droppings at Beach

The Sharon Board of Health is welcoming information from the public about the presence of dog droppings at Veteran's Memorial Park Beach.

Animal Control Officer Diane Malcolmson, Recreation Director Brett MacGowan and various health board members and citizens have "all been out walking the beach" looking for droppings over the past week, Chairman Suzi Peck said Monday night.

A seasonal ban of dogs from that beach and the fenced area of Community Center Beach will take effect June 25 unless evidence from this work warrants revoking the ban. Monitoring would continue, though, and the board would reinstate the ban if necessary.

to implement the ban, a board regulation, which would run April 15 to Oct. 15. Proponents cited concerns about people being exposed to dog feces in the sand.

"We will look at the preponderance of the evidence when we're making our decision on June 25," Peck said Monday night.

"The more people who are walking the beach looking at it and assessing its cleanliness and hopefully cleaning up when they're doing it, that's a great thing for the town and for everybody involved."
