SHREWSBURY, MA — Accessibility upgrades at the Shrewsbury Senior Center are complete, providing visitors with new ways to safely enter and navigate the building.
The project added several improvements at the Senior Center, 98 Maple Ave., including a full stretch of ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps around the building, a new sidewalk near the ADA parking spaces in front of the flagpole and new ADA parking spaces adjacent to the building’s side entrance.
Town officials said residents were already using the new features on the first day after the work was completed. The upgrades are intended to make the building easier to reach from nearby parking areas and improve movement around the property for residents of all mobility levels.
The work was part of a grant-funded accessibility project that began in May and was expected to wrap up by early June. At the time, officials said the project would create a more welcoming and accessible experience for Senior Center patrons.
The Senior Center, operated through the Shrewsbury Council on Aging, provides programs, services and gathering space for older residents. Town officials said they look forward to seeing more patrons use the building and take part in what the center offers now that the accessibility improvements are finished.
The project builds on broader efforts by communities to improve access to public buildings and to make municipal facilities easier to use for residents with varying mobility needs.
"We look forward to many more patrons being able to access the Senior Center and enjoy all it has to offer," the town wrote in an announcement Tuesday. "We hope to see you there soon!"
