Shrewsbury Eases Water Bill Relief Policy For Indoor Leaks

Shrewsbury residents who face unusually high water bills from indoor leaks may now have a clearer path to relief.

SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury residents who face unusually high water bills from indoor leaks may now have a clearer path to relief.

The Select Board voted last week to approve a revised Water Bill Abatement policy, replacing a 2015 policy town officials described as too restrictive and difficult to enforce. Under the updated policy, residents who repair a documented indoor leak can have above-average water use billed at the town’s lowest-tier water rate, according to the revised policy.

The policy applies to indoor leaks, including leaking toilets, fixtures or pipes inside a home, according to the town. Residents must provide acceptable proof of repair to qualify.

Abatement requests must be filed within 30 days of the billing date in question, and DPW utility accounts must be paid in full to be eligible. Requests will be reviewed within 45 days of receipt, according to the new policy.

The Select Board considered the update during its June 23 meeting.

The town’s Water Division also offers a free initial technician visit to help residents locate a leak before hiring a private plumber, according to information provided with the policy update. The application process has also been simplified online, with in-person help available at Town Hall for seniors and residents who may be uncomfortable using technology.

Interest will continue to accrue on past-due unpaid balances, regardless of abatement status, according to the policy. Final abatement decisions are subject to approval by the Water and Sewer Superintendent.
